DOE "DESIGNATION"
RECENT EMAIL:
LET’S GET ORGANIZED! Since restarting the Clean Cities Coalition here, I’ve spoken personally with almost everyone getting this email. We’ve talked about foreign oil, the economy, cleaner emissions, fuel cost savings. Despite Chicken Little media reports, I think everyone is aware that American initiative has come through: with the right alt fuel in the right vehicle, we can actually save money AND supply our own vehicle fuel. But which fuel for which vehicle?
Clean Cities, a Department of Energy program, is the one-stop location for accurate information about alternative fuels, vehicles, infrastructure, fire codes, technician training resources, and calculating the financial impact of adopting alternative fuels. We live in the midst of the nation’s biggest freight shipping center and we are at the tip of the spear for petroleum reduction. I need your help to get the needed information out to fleets and individuals. If not us, who?
DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY: I am going to start moving this Coalition through the process to become DOE “designated”, which means we’ll have access to more resources and more grant opportunities (and will owe DOE a bunch of reports and other “deliverables”). Most coalitions collect an annual fee or membership charge. Coalitions that receive designation must have:
• An active network of stakeholders who meet regularly and have defined roles
• A clear organizational structure
• A coordinator to lead the coalition
• Reliable funding for the coordinator position (there is no DOE money for this)
• Specific, attainable goals and a strategic plan for achieving them
• Strong partnerships with energy officials, air-quality officials, and other decision makers who control resources and help guide policy.
If you are tired of watching the USA dragged around by the price and availability of foreign oil, volunteer to serve on the initial “advisory board”, please contact Paul Rice at (731) 298-6447 or [email protected] or through the website. If interest merits, I’ll notify you of an organization meeting later this month. Thank you! P

Clean Cities promotes more than one fuel, but I recommend Pickens’ video about foreign oil dependence. Are we “saps”? https://www.youtube.com/user/pickensplan
