BLENDS
One easy way to reduce petroleum consumption is to blend it with another non-petroleum product that does the same thing, ie, provides energy to run an internal combustion engine without reducing or destroying the engine's ability to do work. It is said that some people will use alt fuel if it is cleaner, some will use it because the dollars don't go to people who hate us, and the other 99% will use it because it saves them money.
Everyone is aware that most gasoline sold in the US today is blended with 10% ethanol; most diesel is blended with 5% biodiesel. Most diesels run fine without modification with 20% biodiesel, however, it has been difficult to source B20 in West Tennessee.
Out-of-useful-life heavy duty truck engines, defined by EPA as over 400,000 miles, can be rebuilt and altered to inject natural gas, propane, or hydrogen into the air intake system (also called "co-fuel"), displacing about 70% of diesel consumption in highway driving. This is relatively inexpensive and provides a quick return on investment.
"Flex Fuel" vehicles can run on from 15-85% ethanol, and are abundant in Tennessee, but there is only one fueling dispenser offering flexfuel to the public in West Tennessee.
Clean Cities has a wealth of information on blends and your Coordinator is available to help you determine if a blend will work for your fleet.
